A modern consumer unit can improve protection and make faults easier to isolate—but replacing one is a testing job as well as an installation job.
The consumer unit, sometimes called the fuse board, distributes electricity around the property and contains the devices that protect each circuit. Older boards are common across Hastings and East Sussex, but age or a plastic enclosure alone does not automatically mean immediate replacement is required.
Why Consumer Units Have Changed
Homes now use more electrical equipment and modern protective devices can respond to faults in ways older rewireable fuses cannot. Current designs commonly use individual RCBOs, helping isolate a fault to one circuit rather than disconnecting a large part of the property.
RCD protection
An RCD monitors for leakage that may indicate current flowing along an unintended path. It can disconnect the supply quickly and is an important part of protection against electric shock.
RCBO protection
An RCBO combines residual-current protection with overcurrent protection for an individual circuit. This limits the disruption caused by one faulty circuit and makes diagnosis clearer.
Surge protection
A surge protective device can reduce the risk of transient overvoltage damaging sensitive equipment. Whether it is required or recommended depends on the installation and the assessment made for the work.
Signs Your Fuse Board Deserves Assessment
- Old rewireable fuses or limited RCD protection
- Damage, overheating, loose covers or missing blanks
- Regular tripping that has not been diagnosed
- New circuits planned for an EV charger, extension or major renovation
- An EICR observation involving the board or its protective devices
A New Board Is Not a Cure for Every Fault
If circuits are damaged or appliances are causing leakage, a replacement consumer unit may reveal the problem rather than cure it. Existing circuits should be tested before and during the upgrade so any issues can be explained and addressed properly.
What Is Involved in an Upgrade?
The work normally includes assessment of the existing installation, isolation of the supply, replacement of the board, identification and labelling of circuits, testing, electrical certification and Building Regulations notification where applicable. Power will be unavailable for part of the day.
